Movie Review On Still Wylde
Written And Directed By Ingrid
Still Wylde is a short film that masterfully blends comedy and heartbreak, reflecting the unpredictable nature of life, relationships and personal choice. Written, directed and performed by Ingrid Hass, the film captures a pivotal emotional moment in the lives of Gertie and her boyfriend Sam as they confront the implications of an unexpected pregnancy while still reeling from a recent loss. With a strong supporting cast precise cinematography and minimalistic yet effective production design, the film offers an authentic portrayal of how people manage love, grief and uncertainty in modern relationships.
Set almost entirely within the confines of a parked car, the film follows Gertie and Sam during a quiet but emotionally explosive moment. Gertie is pregnant and the couple must decide how to move forward. Despite the intimacy of the setting , the emotional distance between them is palpable. Their conversation is layered with confusion, suppressed grief and dark humor, revealing that even when people think they know what they want, life rarely cooperates.
Ingrid Hass’s direction is intimate and confident. By keeping the film rooted in a single location, she emphasizes character interaction over spectacle. The cinematographer captures this intimacy with tight framing and soft natural light, enhancing the realism and allows viewers to focus entirely on body language, facial expressions and tone.
Haas performance as Gertie is raw, witty and emotionally rich. She portrays a woman who is both fragile and fiercely independent. Barry Rothbart portrayal of Sam offers a compelling contrast supportive but indecisive, grieving yet emotionally blocked. Their dynamic creates tension and authenticity. Supporting cast members (such as Sabrina Jalees, Cassandra James and Suzo Yoshida ) contributes to the off screen world, hinting at the broader context of the couple’s emotional state.
The score is subtle but effective, adding emotional resonance without overwhelming the naturalistic dialogue. Sound design keeps the atmosphere grounded, ambient sounds such as distant traffic and interior silence give the impression of realism and emotional weight. The track of music is certain scenes heightens tension and underlines the couple’s emotional disconnect.
The production design is minimal yet fitting. The film explores what it means to be a relationship that is undefined and complicated.Gertie and Sam are not firmly committed, yet their lives are deeply entangled emotionally, physically and now biologically. The key undercurrent of the film is grief. Though never fully explained, a recent loss haunts both characters. The avoidance of directly addressing it adds adds to the tension and speaks to how people cope differently with trauma. Gertie’s control over her own body and decisions is central to the narrative. The film does not romanticize motherhood or make her a victim instead it gives her agency, voice and emotional complexity.
Still wylde is a brief yet impactful short film that uses its limited runtime to delve into deeply human experiences. Ingrid Haas excels in blending wry humor and raw emotion, crafting a narrative that feels both intensely personal and universally relatable.
